Journey to Meet God: Br. Fabian Adderley, Conventual Franciscan

Br. Fabian Adderley at the 2019 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering

Br. Fabian Adderley, Conventual Franciscan, is the recent recipient of the Diversity Outreach Initiative Scholarship and attended the 2019 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington, DC, February 2 – 5. He is seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in Philosophy and part of the collaborative program with the University of the Incarnate Word. Br. Fabian is planning to graduate this Spring 2019.

What has led you on the path you are on today?

From as young as I could remember I’ve always felt a calling to serve, however, I had no idea what that meant. My life has always been torn between two worlds; the temporal that of which every human being so desires, earthly happiness, and immediate fulfillment, and that which surpasses our finite understanding, a longing for greater, for God. However, a few years back I was in a terrible accident, one where I should have been dead. I came face to face with sister Death for the third time in my life. And it was at this point that I decided to devote my entire being to God. This was the third strike for me, and after spending more than a year in the hospital recovering, as I met death, I also met God face to face. Moreover, this was the beginning of the change in my life that has led me on the path I am today.

Who has had the most influence on you?

The person who has influenced me to be who I am today is my mom. Who is she? She is human, with flaws and weaknesses! She is kind and loving! She is God fearing! She gives without expecting anything in return! She is a woman, daughter, sister, mother, friend, and grandmother! She is and has been an imitation of Christ! She is beautiful and wonderfully made in God’s image! Above all, she is Christ’s love and has been a model of His love for me my entire life! And without her my life today would be nothing! Because it was she who set the example I needed to follow.

What are the objectives/goals that you most want to achieve in your work / study?

My goals can sum this way. I don’t think myself to be better than anyone else. I have confidence and try my best to respect everyone I meet. I do not believe in preaching, but I do believe in always listening. I try my best not to judge because most times my judgment of others reflects me. I feel empathy and I feel pain. I try to give the best possible advice that I can when asked. And truth be told as much as I know about this life that I live, I know nothing about it at all. And my only real goal is to imitate kindness and love, and though sometimes I fail, I try to be faithful and try again. Because the end result should always be Christ.

Viaje al encuentro de Dios

Br.
