Born in small and peaceful town in Guanajuato, Mexico, Andres Chàvez, the second of five children, was raised within a practicing and very pious Catholic family. At an early age, he entered the seminary to discern his vocation. Ultimately, the Lord called him to the vocation of marriage, one that has lasted 20 years, but the continuous relationship with God motivated him to keep looking for more.
“The growth of my faith and the development of my discipleship have been coming together over the years not from paradoxes, tragedies or some emotional experience in a retreat,” said Andres. “When I see it in retrospect, I see that it has been the constant walking in a journey through my life by the grace of God.”
Andres attended the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico and studied Chemical Oil Engineering. He came to the United States with his family in 1999 to work for a chemical company, after his employer transferred him from Mexico to Michigan. He relocated to San Antonio, Texas in 2003. While in San Antonio, he attended St. Mary’s University and earned a Masters of Science in Engineering Systems Management. Still, he had a longing to study theology and continue to know and deepen his Catholic faith. The door he sought opened when he learned about the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry at MACC.
“I have always loved to read and study but I knew I had to do it at a higher level to make a difference in our community,” he said. “I am motivated by the opportunity to have had a pedagogical preparation with a formal methodology so that I can teach my brothers correctly what I have learned during these years.”
Andres is one of the students in MACC’s first Spring 2019 graduating class of the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in the Bible. Although like many non-traditional students who face the challenge of making time to study, Andres is grateful for the flexible schedule of the Certificate program.
“Time management was the main challenge for me due to the combination of activities in my family life, my children’s school, my work and the fact that I travel frequently,” he said. “The format of studies of the certificate courses fits well enough so that as a family we can combine all of the above in the best way possible. Without the unconditional support of my wife, I could not be in the place that I am now.”
Andres says he wants to put into practice a practical theology within the people of God. “I have identified a need to develop a ministry that allows the church to attract men, fathers, and those who are astray,” he said. “I think that it is likely that with the example of the approach or conversion of these men and fathers, they may in turn bring other men or their whole family into the church. I would also like to participate and serve in retreats.”
Currently, Andres is involved at St. Padre Pio in the Proclamation of the Word ministry, extraordinary minister of Communion, marriage preparation ministry with his wife and occasionally in the funeral ministry. He and his wife Lety have two sons.
