Reach Out, Live on the Frontier

If we are learning an authentic theology, not right or left, that should not lead us to an ideology, but rather a holy life, said Archbishop Gustavo in a visit with MACC students, staff, and faculty. “Reach out, live on the frontier,” he said. “Don’t live inside where you are familiar with everything and everything is under control.”

Archbishop Gustavo visited MACC on March 6 to celebrate a mass. The mass is celebrated annually during the spring, however, this year García-Siller also held a special meeting to reflect on letter from Pope Francis to the Grand Chancellor of the Pontifica Universidad Católica Argentina for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Theology. Attendees filled MACC’s Community Center as Archbishop Gustavo opened up a discussion on the theme of the letter, which in short encourages the teaching and studying of theology to be lived on a frontier where the needs of the people are visible.

As MACC’s programs continue to grow and increase in enrollment this mindset is important, especially in a challenging time of polarization in our society. Archbishop Gustavo stated these times put everyone to a test because ideologies are stronger than ever.

“Wherever we are we are called to live out what the Lord has given to us and our experience of God for the sake of others,” he said. He ended the discussion saying the entire document could be summarized in one word, mercy, which turned out to be a theme carried over to his homily at mass.

The visit by the archbishop struck a chord with many of the attendants, and several shared their thoughts regarding the message of the letter from Pope Francis.

“Theology is something I love, and I think sometimes in the academic world it’s easy to get caught up in our heads,” said Julia King, a student taking classes in the collaborative program with the University of the Incarnate Word. “I think a big part of learning theology is applying it. Why learn it if you’re not going to build the church and bring it to others.”

Like King, hearing the words of Archbishop Gustavo and Pope Francis, encourages MACC to live out these challenging times with joy and be effective in our mission and everything that refers to enculturation.
