When we are invited to the table, who do I avoid sitting next to? What are my prejudices, my stereotypes? MACC’s President, Dr. Arturo Chávez, posed these questions while speaking about intercultural competencies at the V Encuentro in September. These are important questions to ask ourselves living in a society that still faces issues regarding race and culture. While diversity brings value to a community, it can often be challenging to be open and accepting of the other.

Through the generous support of the GHR Foundation, founded by Gerald and Henrietta Rauenhorst, MACC has implemented a new intercultural resources program called Weaving Cultures-Entrelazando Culturas under its innovative Sisters’ Intercultural Studies (SIS) program.

“I believe that as women religious we are called to embrace our experience of being and becoming intercultural as a prophetic participation in God’s mission,” said Sr. Joan Marie Steadman, who is a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and has been assisting MACC with the preparation of Weaving Cultures-Entrelazando Culturas. “Critiquing one’s own cultures, blind spots, biases and prejudices is demanding work as we seek to weave together a tapestry where no culture is dominant over another culture; where something new is created.”

""

The program will provide educational and formational experiences, consultative and coaching services, and specially designed resources for international congregations of women religious who are intentionally responding to the opportunities and challenges of growing cultural and generational diversity in their communities.

“I know that at times I have unknowingly hurt or offended others in my congregation by what I have said or the way in which I said something by making assumptions about another’s culture,” said Sr. Joan. “I have also experienced the grace and growth that comes when others sit down with me and reflect on what they have experienced as culturally insensitive and hurtful.”

The first residential is next year in February. Six communities will be participating including, the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from Corpus Christi, Texas, Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Cabrini Sisters) (Stella Maris Province), Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ (American Province), Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and Compañía de Santa Teresa de Jesús (Teresians). Over the course of three days, leaders from each community will travel to MACC to participate in interactive group work led by Fr. Anthony Gittins, as the main presenter, and MACC faculty.

“There is no endpoint to this journey we are making together, not for our own sake but for the sake of a global community longing for peace and respect for all people,” said Sr. Joan.

Joan.
