After much discernment and planning, MACC’s partnership with ARISE, a community based program that works with immigrants, primarily from Mexico to the U.S., has taken off. They are calling it “PuenTec,” a technological bridge that will bring the two organizations together to develop distance learning with the community from ARISE using the video conferencing tool, Zoom.
During the summer, the team from ARISE visited MACC to talk in-depth about what this project would entail, the steps it would take and form a working calendar for the year. In September, Sr. Rose Quilter, who has been facilitating this project and Lodie Mueller, MACC’s ESL coordinator, went to ARISE Support Center in Alamo, Texas to conduct individual language assessments for 27 women.
“It was an extraordinary experience, said Muller. “I listened with open-hearted wonder to each of their amazing stories of courage, resilience, and perseverance as I did oral interviews to determine their English proficiency.”
Ramona Casas, who is the Community Organizer and Coordinator for Border Witness Program at ARISE, has been with the organization since it was founded in 1987, Sr. Gerrie Naughton, RSM. She happily talks about the very first time ARISE had visitors from MACC, when a big bus drove up to the center and out poured dozens of people.
“I was asked to show them around and with the microphone on the bus I shared our dreams, our expectations, what we wanted for our families and the struggle we have as immigrants. It was mutually empowering.”
For Casas, the rekindling of this collaboration between MACC and ARISE is very important. “We’ve always been in relationship with MACC,” she stated. “We’ve had groups of visitors, border witness programs, many Sisters came to visit and collaborate because they were connected with MACC and some of them stayed to work at ARISE. This renewed collaboration will strengthen our respective mission, and I feel so privileged to be part of this new era”
After staff members from both organizations worked hard to install Zoom technology at ARISE centers, conduct training sessions, and handle the registration process for the participants, the first transmission to ARISE from MACC took place via Zoom on November 3. Come January 2018, 30 women will be enrolled in distance learning ESL courses that last the duration of the spring semester, January to May. Casas is excited to be among this new cohort of students.
“I could not be more thrilled at this opportunity to serve the ARISE leaders as we collaboratively forge a new path,” said Mueller. “The 30-year legacy of ARISE founder, MACC alumna Sr. Gerrie Naughton, lives on in the servant leadership of the ARISE women, who incarnate the love and mercy of Jesus as they serve and transform the impoverished “colonias” in the Rio Grande Valley.”
Aside from the ESL courses, the staff from MACC and ARISE have also scheduled community reflection of the Gospel of Luke during Advent, which will be conducted via Zoom.
