Homily by Fr. Nader Ata, Conventual Franciscans
Hace veinticinco días llegué a MACC.
To be honest with all of you, I did not want to come here to MACC to improve my Spanish. I was very happy where I was. But God and my provincial had other plans. So I’m here – presiding over Holy Mass.
Before coming here I was not doing much with the Hispanic community. If anything, I heard one or two confessions. And I blessed religious things three or four times. But being in charge of the Hispanic ministry in a parish, not in any way, not for me. But as I told you before, God and my provincial had other plans.
Twenty-five days ago I came to MACC. After 5, 325 (five thousand three hundred twenty-five) hours of Spanish classes; 1, 320 (one thousand three hundred and twenty) hours of Holy Mass and Holy Hour; 500 (five hundred) hours of rest; 1, 440 (one thousand four hundred and forty) hours of meals; and of course 3 (three) hours of MACC Night – I am here today, the day of completion and I am preaching in Spanish. A gift and a grace from God.
A gift and a grace from God. This solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a gift and a grace from God. Another gift and another grace from God is that there are more than twenty people who can now accompany and serve the people of God a little more than before in English and Spanish. Today I offer this Holy Mass for another gift and another grace from God – a gift and a grace from God for the teachers and staff of MACC. Because of your knowledge, compassion, and patience we can accompany and serve the people of God. Thank you for your love and teaching talent. Thanks for your love of life. Thank you for your love of God and the church.
And one more thing: if you want to know the total hours … it’s 8,588 (eight thousand five hundred and eighty-eight) hours less maybe the thousand hours we studied.
Fr. Nader will begin full-time Spanish ministry in Brooklyn, New York as of August 1st.
